I Was wondering if you could lead me to a spot to do some crabbing.

Me, my wife, and two boys just got back from a good trip to Dillon Beach CA. We had fun crabbing the pier for a couple hours. My kids are two and four so a pier or jetty would be nice. If you can help me, I would appreciate it.

Crabbing Tips from Leo

Greetings Leo,

Thanks so much for your tips about crabbing at Dillon Beach - I'll bet you'll return often now that you've discovered it!

And, since you're also close to Santa Cruz, see my tips below about crabbing off the Santa Cruz pier (if you haven't already).

About crabbing in Bodega Bay, you can crab for dungeness, rock, and yellow crab (during the appropriate seasons, of course) from any of several jetties, from on shore, or you can take a boat out into the bay.

When you go, do stop in at Spud Point Crab Company in Spud Point Marina - they have the best clam chowder, crab sandwich, and crab cakes that Wolf and I have ever tasted! See #TravelTuesday #Photo-of-the-Week Detour to Spud Point Marina for more about that!

Cheers,
Suzi

Crabbing

Leo again.

Dillon Beach rents boats - do a little fishing while crabbing off the boat - that's my next trip.

They say there's a buoy not far from shore where the crab like to hang out.

Crabbing
by: Anonymous

Went to Dillon Beach, Lawson's Landing, 2 weeks ago, bought a crab net and learned how to crab, had a great time.

The red crab was the only crab legal at that time, today is dungeness crab season till June. Caught a lot of red crab and dungeness crab, but having to throw the dungeness back, really good size.

I'm one hour from Dillon Beach, and two hours from Santa Cruz. If anybody knows of any crab spots around Bodega Bay, please let me know,

Leo

As a matter of fact, I do!

Greetings JOJO,

I know the perfect place for you and your family to go crabbing!

One of the most memorable days my DH and I spent with our young sons was to take them crabbing off the Santa Cruz Wharf - many, many years ago.

We bought a crab trap with a long line and some fish heads for bait, attached the fish heads to the inside of the trap, lowered the trap down into the water, and waited - snuggled in our blankets and sipping hot chocolate from a thermos.

And we actually caught a crab! What an experience!!

There are several places along the Northern California coastline where you can drop a crab trap: Pacifica, Bodega Bay breakwater, Point Arena, Crescent City.

You can also go kayak crabbing, or take a chartered sports fishing vessel from almost any of the coastal towns. (Not sure I'd try this until the kidlettes are a little older, though.)

Whichever way you go, there's nothing better than fresh-caught crab - whether you serve it at a beach-side picnic or take it home for dinner!

Hope this helps and Happy Crabbing!

Cheers,
Suzi
